About me

(SPANISH BELOW)

Gonzalo Fanjul is a researcher and anti-poverty activist. He currently leads ISGlobal‘s Policy and Development team, and is Head of Research at the porCausa Foundation (journalism and research on migration). He is a research associate for migration at the ODI think tank in London. In autumn 2018, he joined Ashoka’s global network as a social innovation fellow for his work on generating alternatives in the field of migration.

He is a regular contributor to written and audiovisual media, and is the author and co-editor of the El País blog 3,500 Millones, for which he received the FAO Award in 2012.

The analysis of the phenomenon of poverty and its narrative challenges in increasingly uninformed societies and in weakening global governance systems has been a priority for Fanjul for almost three decades. His priority areas of interest have been in global health, human mobility, and child poverty.

In 2008, he did postgraduate studies at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and collaborated with professor Lant  Pritchett, exploring the links of migration and development and the options for reform. This work continued in the think tank +Social, focused on the reform of the migration model, and later in the creation of the Fundación porCausa, from which he promotes analysis, information and dialogue for migration reform.

The research projects of this organisation – which collaborates with media and think tanks on three continents – include the human rights crisis at EU borders, the generation of inclusive narratives to address the rise of xenophobia or the compilation of good practices that inspire a reform of the current model.

In addition to migration, Fanjul’s work has focused on child poverty and international cooperation, especially in the field of global health. He has authored the Innocenti-UNICEF Report Card 12, a global benchmark report on child poverty in rich countries, and in 2016 he received an excellence grant for researchers from the BBVA Foundation.

Prior to that, in 1995, he had completed university studies in economics and development, and during those years he contributed to the start-up of Proyecto Acogida, an organisation that supports drug addicts in rehabilitation. After a period in Cuzco (Peru) working in a local rural development organisation, he joined Oxfam Intermón‘s campaigns team, where he led the Research Team for more than a decade and was responsible for different Oxfam International policy and campaign initiatives.

Over the years, he has authored numerous publications in the fields of international migration, development aid, global health, international trade, agri-food markets, Spanish foreign policy and child poverty.
